How important is it to take an SAT prep course?
This depends upon how important it is for you to get into your first-choice college and how much emphasis is placed on the SAT by the colleges to which you intend to apply. Colleges vary widely in their admissions criteria. Many place heavy emphasis on standardized testing, while others do not require the SAT or ACT at all. If the SAT will be an important factor to your preferred colleges, finding an effective SAT prep course can make the difference between acceptance and rejection.

What should I look for in an SAT prep course?

Selecting the right course for you is essential. Consider the following:
  • Private instruction or limited class size that groups students according to score
  • Best instructor
    1. (S)he should have extensive experience
    2. (S)he should have impressive average score increases- look for statistics on a particular instructor, NOT the company for which (s)he works
    3. Get a referral if you can; others' positive experiences can tell you much more than a brochure
    4. Talk to the instructor not just a company representative. Getting a feel for the person teaching is critical. Each trainer has his or her own style, which may or may not fit with what you need. Know this before you invest your hard-earned money.
